Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Signs and Symptoms:
- Heart burn
- Burning in throat
- Cough
- Voice changes
- Hiccups
Things to Avoid:
- Caffeine; including chocolate
- Alcohol
- Tobacco Products
- Stress
- IF A FOOD PRODUCT BOTHERS YOU, DON’T EAT IT!
Modifications:
- Decrease total fat intake
- Avoid large meals
- Avoid eating 3 hrs before lying flat
- Weight loss
- Sleep on your Left side
- Chew non-mint gum ( this will increase saliva production and decrease acid in the esophagus)
Recommendations:
- You may have been given a prescription from your doctor for the treatment of GERD. If you do not see improvements with the use of the prescription you may need to be seen by a specialist called a Gastroenterologist.
