Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux DiseaseSigns and Symptoms:

  • Heart burn
  • Burning in throat

Things to Avoid:

  • Caffeine; including chocolate
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco Products
  • Stress
  • IF A FOOD PRODUCT BOTHERS YOU, DON’T EAT IT!

Modifications:

  • Decrease total fat intake
  • Avoid large meals
  • Avoid eating 3 hrs before lying flat
  • Weight loss
  • Sleep on your Left side
  • Chew non-mint gum ( this will increase saliva production and decrease acid in the esophagus)

Recommendations:

  • You may have been given a prescription from your doctor for the treatment of GERD. If you do not see improvements with the use of the prescription you may need to be seen by a specialist called a Gastroenterologist.
